How Do I Become a Nurse? (Local)

In this session, we discuss what it takes to become a nurse locally and address financial concerns as well as recommended nursing colleges. Have fun reading!

Phyllis Chan graduated from AMC in 2002 and is currently working as a Registered Nurse in Singapore. You can read more about Phyllis’s profile here.

Carmen Teh went to Lam Wah Ee nursing college (Penang) and is currently working at Hospital Fatimah Ipoh. Read more about Carmen’s story here.

How do you become a nurse and how do you afford the cost of studies?

Phyllis: If you or your family are worried about finances, let me assure you not to worry. Generally speaking, there is a shortage of nurses right now. Therefore many hospitals/schools of nursing/nursing colleges are providing scholarships or bursaries for those who are interested. HOWEVER, the basic requirement is that you MUST have a minimum of 5 SPM credits that include Science, Mathematics, English and Bahasa Malaysia.

After graduating from the sponsored college or hospital, you have to work for them for few years (the duration will vary between organizations). That is for diploma course (basic) in nursing. You can even pursue your bachelors degree after you start work. There are many, many degree programmes being offered by private colleges that come with education loans. My advise is not to worry about the degree first, just start the journey by targeting a diploma and you will learn what you need to learn as a registered nurse.

Carmen: Locally, there are many hospitals providing sponsorship in nursing courses. The hospitals will provide a monthly allowance (about RM650/month), with food and lodging provided (hostel stay). You will get a 3-year diploma course but will be contractually bonded to that hospital for 5 years. Terms and conditions may change in different hospitals. This is just a brief overview for you to refer to about sponsorship in nursing courses.

Even in Ipoh itself, Hospital Pantai Putri and Ipoh Specialist Centre have their own nursing colleges in KL. They trained state registered nurses to work under their own hospitals. Hospital Fatimah provides sponsorship to Hospital Lam Wah Ee Penang or Asunta Hospital KL. I have just completed my 5 years bonding contract with Hospital Fatimah :)

Are there any nursing colleges that you will recommend?

Carmen: There are few good colleges that I would recommend, such as Lam Wah Ee Nursing College (Penang), Adventist Nursing College (Penang) and Asunta Nursing College (KL). This few colleges provide good hospital based nursing practice.

It is important for you to know that there are some nursing colleges and schools out there advertising their nursing course as the best among all the colleges in the nursing field. You have to be wise in choosing them. Some of the colleges’ nursing course have no LAN recommendation, which means it might not be acknowledged by the Malaysia Nursing Board. This will be a problem when you start to look for a nursing position in hospital after graduation.

Phyllis: Assunta Nursing College is quality nursing college that is very famous in Malaysia. The nurses from Assunta have received good performance reviews from hospitals in the Middle East, the UK, Australia and Singapore. Assunta Nursing College is located in Petaling Jaya.

Hospital Law Wah Ee is another good nursing college located in Penang.

Lastly, for those who are interested in Singapore, Nanyang Polytechnic is an established nursing school in Sinapgore. This is the only polytechnic in Singapore that offers nursing courses at the tertiary level. If they sponsor you, your career is guaranteed upon graduation because you will need to work for them (to me it’s not a bad thing because you wont’ be jobless!!!)

Phyllis and Carmen, thank you both for taking the time to answer these questions.
